Gustave Geffroy

Gustave Geffroy (1855–1926) was a prominent French journalist, art critic, historian, and novelist. Beginning his career in journalism, he became the art critic for *La Justice* in 1884, where he passionately championed the Impressionist movement and artists such as Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne, and Auguste Rodin. His seminal work, *Histoire de l'impressionnisme*, published in 1892, marked one of the first comprehensive historical treatments of the artistic style. Geffroy further solidified his critical legacy with the multi-volume collection of his articles, *La Vie artistique* (1892–1903), offering insightful commentary on contemporary art. He authored the initial biography and catalog of Claude Monet in 1922, providing crucial documentation of the artist's life and work. Beyond his prolific writing, Geffroy served as director of the Gobelins tapestry factory from 1908 and was elected president of the Académie Goncourt in 1912, underscoring his significant influence within French arts and letters.
