Korean National Treasures: 2,000 Years of Art
The Art Institute of Chicago is set to host a landmark exhibition of Korean art, its most significant in forty years. From March 7 through July 5, 2026, Korean National Treasures: 2,000 Years of Art will present a sweeping overview of the peninsula’s artistic heritage. The exhibition features 140 masterworks, including 22 pieces officially designated by the Korean government as National Treasures or Treasures for their exceptional artistic and historical value.
This major presentation offers a rare opportunity for a Western audience to engage with works of profound cultural importance, many of which are seldom seen outside of Korea. The pieces span an immense historical arc, from the Three Kingdoms period starting in 57 BCE, through the Goryeo (918–1392) and Joseon (1392–1897) dynasties, and into the 20th century. According to the Art Institute, the exhibition aims to chart the core ideas, values, and traditions that have informed Korea's creative output for two millennia.
A Landmark Collection's Public Debut
The exhibition’s significance is magnified by the origin of its artworks. The objects are drawn from the national bequest of the late Samsung chairman, Lee Kun-hee. Following his death, his family made a historic donation of more than 23,000 artworks to Korean national museums. As reported by WBEZ Chicago, this philanthropic act was connected to an inheritance tax liability estimated at around $11 billion. The transformation of this once-private collection into a public trust is a momentous event in the cultural heritage landscape, making these works, as the Art Institute notes, "the people's treasures."
For art market professionals and collectors, the story behind the collection provides a compelling case study in the stewardship and complex afterlife of a world-class private holding. The sheer scale of the donation and its connection to estate planning have implications that resonate throughout the international art world.
A Curated Journey Through Korean Aesthetics

Curated by Yeonsoo Chee, the Art Institute's Korea Foundation Associate Curator of Korean art, the exhibition is organized to provide insights into how these objects functioned within Korean society. The selection encompasses a diverse range of media, including historical and modern paintings, ceramics, bronzes, and exquisite objects crafted for Buddhist worship and the pursuits of scholarly life.
Among the highlights is a gilt-bronze Bodhisattva Triad with a Single Halo from the 6th century, a masterpiece of the Three Kingdoms period. The exhibition thoughtfully explores the evolution of aesthetics and techniques across different eras, from the refined celadons of the Goryeo dynasty to the distinct minimalist or ornate styles of Joseon dynasty paintings and ceramics. This chronological and thematic journey allows visitors to trace the development of a uniquely Korean artistic identity.
The show is the result of a major international collaboration. The Art Institute of Chicago has partnered with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art, the National Museum of Korea, and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, underscoring the global importance of this cultural exchange.
Why It Matters
Korean National Treasures is more than a historical survey; it is an essential event for anyone invested in Asian art. For art historians and curators, it is an unparalleled opportunity to study a canonical selection of Korean masterworks firsthand. For dealers and collectors, the exhibition serves as both an educational platform and a potential market catalyst. Such high-profile institutional showcases can invigorate interest in specific collecting categories. By presenting a definitive narrative of Korean art history, the exhibition provides invaluable context and a benchmark for quality, which can inform acquisitions and connoisseurship in the field for years to come.
